Feb. 29, 2008 — A guideline for archetype 2 diabetes diagnosis is getting questioned in a new report.

Writing in The Lancet, researchers report that their tools and materials “suggest that the criteria for diagnosing diabetes could need reassessment.”

But not everyone agrees.

The new report “raises more questions than answers” and until a better benchmark becomes available, “we are probably good in the highest degree sticking by what we know,” states an editorial published with the study.

The American Diabetes Association and its international partners had even now planned to discuss the issue in May, according to M.

Employing People With Severe Mental Illness: Previous Work History Predicts Likelihood Of Getting A Job, UK

Friday, February 29th, 2008

People with severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia, who have worked before, have fewer of their social needs met, and better relationships with their vocational workers are more likely to get a job and work for longer.

Illness remission, and faster uptake of vocational services, are also associated with working more, according to a new study published in the March 2008 issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry.

A randomized controlled trial was carried out in 6 European centres - London, Ulm-Gunzburg, Rimini, Zurich, Groningen and Sofia. It compared the individual placement and support (IPS) model of supported occupation with the usual high-quality vocational rehabilitation based on the ‘train and place’ model. Productivity And Prejudice - NHS Alliance

Yesterday’s report from the National Audit Office in succession the GP contract contains a wealth of valuable information and is right to say there is a need to focus on outcomes.

However there is a lack of an appropriate definition of what productivity means in practice for the NHS. Consequently the report risks encouraging further anti-doctor prejudice.

In fact, the cost to each tax payer of their general practice team - perfect with GPs, nurses, receptionists and other staff - is £120 per year. That is less than the cost of a television licence.

Healthcare is too sensitive and too complex to rely on definitions of productivity that depend merely on activity. (Read the full post about ‘Productivity And Prejudice - NHS Alliance’…)

The distinctive ability of mothers to identify the cries of their offspring is widely evident in nature, where it is critical to the survival of these offspring. In humans, we are aware that the distinctive ability of mothers to allow and respond to the smiles and cries of their babies plays an significant role in the psychological, cognitive, and social development of these babies. We have had a very limited reasoning faculty of how the maternal brain accomplishes these amazing feats, but a new study published in the February 15th issue of Biological Psychiatry now provides some new discernment.

There is a wealth of scientific literature available on the treatment of adults diagnosed with schizophrenia. However, there is a paucity of data to guide the treatment of children and adolescents with schizophrenia. “Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved the use of aripiprazole and risperidone for adolescents with schizophrenia, few controlled data are available to help guide clinicians regarding the control of children and adolescents with schizophrenia who not answer the expectation of to respond to these standard ‘first-line’ antipsychotic treatments,” according to Dr. Sanjiv Kumra. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have discovered a possible target to treat bloodstream bacterial infections.

Most bacterial pathogens can march into the bloodstream, which can lead to severe sepsis, a syndrome that kills about 215,000 of the 750,000 people affected in the United States each year, according to a study published in the journal Critical Care Medicine.

“The growth of bacterial pathogens in blood represents one of the most dangerous stages of infection,” said Alexander Mankin, professor and associate director of UIC’s Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. Differences in gene expression levels between people of European versus African ancestry can affect how each group responds to certain drugs or fights off specific infections, report researchers from the University of Chicago Medical Center and the general tone Research Laboratory at Affymetrix Inc. of Santa Clara, CA.

In the March 7, 2008, print issue of American Journal of Human Genetics, and published early online, the researchers used Affymetrix exon arrays to show that expression levels for nearly five percent of the 9,156 human genes they studied varied significantly between individuals of European and African ancestry.
